Water treatment in the steel and metallurgical industries

WATER TREATMENT IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY

Efficient cooling

The steel and metallurgical industry is characterised by highly energy- and heat-intensive processes, where cooling towers play a fundamental role in ensuring continuity of production. These systems dissipate the heat generated in furnaces, rolling mills and other critical equipment, maintaining safe and efficient operating conditions.

The steel industry, which uses direct cooling to cool metal parts or ingots in continuous casting and rolling processes, has water that is highly contaminated with oils, greases, metal particles and slag, which must be filtered and treated appropriately.

Open cooling circuits

Treatments adapted to the steel industry

In this context, having a comprehensive water treatment programme is essential for the industry. At Adiquímica, we design specific solutions for the particular conditions of the steel and metallurgical sector, where high concentration cycles, variability in the quality of the water supply and the presence of metal contaminants require a highly specialised approach. Our treatments are based on:

  • Scale control using anti-scaling products that prevent salt and oxide deposits.
  • Corrosion protection, applying formulations that generate passivating films and prolong the useful life of equipment.
  • Microbiological treatment, with biocides adapted to each installation to prevent biofilm formation and Legionella risks
  • Monitoring and digitisation, thanks to continuous control systems that allow the treatment to be adjusted in real time and ensure maximum efficiency
  • Filtration equipment, such as multi-layer filters, rings or screens

Closed cooling circuits

Closed circuits in the metallurgical industry

In the steel and metallurgical industry, closed cooling circuits are essential for protecting critical equipment and ensuring process continuity. Unlike open systems, the water circulates in a sealed circuit, which minimises losses, reduces consumption and prevents the entry of external contaminants.

These systems are used in electric furnaces, converters, continuous casting moulds, rolling mills and compressors, where thermal stability is key to ensuring safety and extending the service life of the installations.

To maintain their reliability, at Adiquímica we apply specific treatment programmes based on corrosion inhibitors, dispersants, selective biocides and glycol stabilising additives, combined with continuous monitoring systems that allow real-time adjustment of operating parameters, such as corrosion rate (MPYs) on a continuous basis.

Circular water economy

Many steel mills seek to reuse and recycle water, recirculating part of the treated effluents to cooling or gas cleaning systems, which has become a strategic objective.

Benefits for steelmaking and metallurgy:

  • Reduction of up to 80-90% in water consumption.
  • Compliance with stricter discharge regulations.
  • Greater water security, avoiding dependence on external sources
  • Possibility of moving towards the concept of “zero liquid discharge” (ZLD).

At Adiquimica, we are committed to improving sustainability and water conservation as part of our internal objectives and corporate values. Our technical department advises its clients on how to meet their environmental objectives and challenges.
